Become a volunteer

Volunteering has always been an integral part of GCP since our very beginning.

GCP started as a community of volunteers responding to the need of asylum seekers arriving in Glasgow over 20 years ago. Since then volunteering has been part of our very core. Volunteers can be found in our services, groups, projects, one-off events, classes and a variety of occasional volunteering. Volunteers at GCP play a pivotal role. Without the commitment, experience and many hours volunteers give to GCP we would not be able to offer the wide range of services we do. Volunteers enhance our work and make our work possible.

We hope that volunteering with GCP is a rich experience for all our volunteers. We strive to welcome and include volunteers in all aspects of the charity. Enabling volunteers to experience opportunities to develop their skills, gain new experience, and facilitate meaningful relationships within our community and staff team.

ESOL

We are seeking dedicated volunteer ESOL Tutors to facilitate inclusive English language sessions for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents, including refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants. This role is focused on more than just grammar; it’s about creating a safe, dignified space where learners can develop everyday communication skills while fostering social integration. You will be responsible for planning and delivering sensitive, multilevel lessons in a supportive environment, managing small group conversations, and assisting with basic administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of our educational programs.

We are looking for qualified individuals (CELTA, TESOL, or TEFL) who possess a genuine passion for education and a high level of cultural sensitivity. Ideal candidates will have experience in an adult ESOL classroom and feel confident communicating with people from diverse racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds. While experience working specifically with displaced people is preferred, we value a patient, friendly attitude and basic IT literacy. In return, you’ll join a vibrant community and gain valuable professional development in leadership and creative lesson planning while making a tangible impact on the lives of those building a new life in Glasgow.

Homework Club

The Homework Club seeks volunteers to support children and young people through a relational “good adult” approach that prioritises holistic wellbeing alongside academic success. Rather than just tutoring, your role is to build trust and resilience by assisting with schoolwork and creative activities in a fun and inclusive environment. You will help children from diverse backgrounds, including BME and migrant communities, gain confidence in their personal and educational lives while also supporting the team with session prep and light organisation.

We are looking for creative and flexible individuals with a genuine passion for working with families and children of all backgrounds. While you will need a PVG membership (provided at no cost) and strong communication skills, no specific teaching qualification is required. We simply value the ability to connect with young people and support their literacy and numeracy. In exchange, you will join a supportive team, gain valuable experience in the charitable sector, and help make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.

Mens Group

The Men’s Group volunteer role focuses on building authentic relationships and supporting social inclusion for men primarily from refugee backgrounds. Based on principles of empowerment and equality, the group provides a relaxed, safe space at the community flat to reduce isolation and foster friendship. As a volunteer, you will engage with participants through conversation, assist the facilitator with various activities, and occasionally help prepare or cook communal dinners. By sharing your own skills and offering non-judgemental support, you help create a dignified environment where common values and connections are celebrated across different cultures and ages.

We are looking for flexible and creative individuals who have a genuine passion for supporting men from BME and refugee communities. The ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and religious backgrounds is essential, especially when engaging with those who have limited English skills. While speaking an additional language is a plus, it is not required. In return for your commitment, you will gain hands-on experience in group facilitation, receive relevant training, and develop a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences within the Glasgow community. Travel costs are reimbursed and all volunteers are welcome to join the group for dinner.

Creche

Our Crèche volunteer role is dedicated to ensuring that childcare is never a barrier to learning, connecting, and flourishing within our community. By providing a consistent and reliable space for children, we empower parents to participate fully in our groups and classes, knowing their little ones are in a safe and nurturing environment.

About the Role As a volunteer, you will help facilitate a stimulating and inclusive space for children aged 6 months and over. Your role is to create a welcoming atmosphere where children can learn and grow through play, while their parents engage in personal development nearby. We currently aim to provide this support during our ESOL classes (Mondays and Wednesdays) and our Women’s Group (Fridays).
